Nach 15 Monaten als Student kann ich sagen: Ich habe noch nie so viel in so kurzer Zeit gelernt.

Der Einstieg in die 42 Vienna beginnt mit einer riesigen Herausforderung. Das Aufnahmeverfahren ist sehr streng und konfrontiert Kandidaten direkt mit C-Programmieraufgaben ohne jegliche Anleitung. Es klingt auf den ersten Blick überwältigend, vor allem wenn man davor noch nie eine Zeile Code geschrieben hat, aber diese Lernmethode funktioniert sehr gut! Nachdem man sich Lösungen selbst erarbeitet hat, bleiben Konzepte nachhaltig im Gedächtnis.

Ein besonderer Aspekt von 42 ist das Peer-Learning. Beim Austausch mit anderen Studierenden werden Konzepte ständig wiederholt. Dabei entsteht eine Community, in der man gemeinsam an Projekten arbeitet und sich gegenseitig unterstützt - ähnlich wie in der Open-Source-Community. Die Zusammenarbeit schafft tolle Lernerfahrungen, und auch Netzwerke.

Mittlerweile befinde ich mich im Mastery-Teil des Curriculums mit Spezialisierung auf Systemarchitektur und Netzwerkinformation. Neben dem regulären Studium konnte ich bereits ca. ein Jahr Berufserfahrung sammeln, und mich auch anderweitig einbringen: als Tutor, im Studierendenrat und bei der Organisation von Learning-Events.

Das 42-Modell hat sich bereits in Frankreich bewährt und ich bin sehr dankbar für die Leute, die es auf sich genommen haben, es nach Österreich zu bringen.

Die IT-Schule ohne Lehrer bietet eine einzigartige Lernerfahrung für alle, die ihre IT-Fähigkeiten verbessern möchten. Die Einrichtung verfügt über modernes Equipment und eine angenehme Atmosphäre, die zum Lernen und Arbeiten einlädt. Die Schüler werden in ihrer Lernzeit von einem Team unterstützt, das sich an ihre individuellen Bedürfnisse anpasst. Die Schule bietet auch regelmäßige Workshops und Veranstaltungen an, um die Schüler auf dem neuesten Stand zu halten. und für Motivation zu sorgen. As someone who completed the common core...
42 is basically a free office space, where you can meet people, and socialise while completing projects and discussing them. I wouldn't call it a school. Since there are no teachers, your learning curve depends on the poeple around you, and your inner motivation. A slightly better alternative to doing online courses at your home by yourself.
The positive side is that you can have fun, participate in events, and meet new people.
My rating is low mainly because they claimed intership guarantee for those completing the common core, which turned out to be a lie. Only a very few people got interships, and almost all offers require fluent german knowledge.

I want to write a detailed review about School 42 Vienna. Overall, it will be negative, but with some positive notes. Please keep in mind that this is my personal experience as a pisciner and a student who completed the Common Core.

First, I want to say that the Piscine was one of the best experiences of my life. It was truly amazing and challenging. I highly recommend everyone to try it.

Next, I want to talk about the expectations of people who want to join this school. If you’re coming from another city or country, imh it’s a waste of money and time. Yes, you might learn how to write simple programs and meet interesting people, but overall, the investment isn’t worth it. You could just spend a year Googling and learning online, implementing your ideas through code. These skills aren’t that hard to learn (spoiler: at 42, no one will teach you how to write "Hello World" in C - you’ll have to Google it yourself).

For people living in Vienna, School 42 is the best way to abuse the AMS (Austrian employment service). There are people who have been receiving benefits from AMS for over a year, and it seems like they’ll continue to do so. The only requirement is to be on campus for 25 hours a week. If you look at the student list, about a third or a quarter of the campus consists of these abusers.

If you think sponsors are paying money and actively recruiting students - haha, that’s far away from the truth. No sponsor representatives are constantly walking around the campus. Usually, there are events once a month where company representatives come, but they’re mostly just there to talk, with very few exceptions. If you speak German, your chances of getting an internship are quite high. If not - unlucky. Out of 500-600 students, I only know two who got a full-time job or internship without strong German skills.

Now, let’s talk about staff support. In any respectable educational institution, professors and staff try to support the best students. Personally, I finished the main part of the program in just under 9 months (this is the best result in Vienna and one of the best in the entire 42 network worldwide). I could consider myself one of the top students. BUT: You won’t get any support. Moreover, some staff members will deliberately ignore you, even when you try to say hello. At least, that’s my experience. The official School 42 Vienna website states that, on average, students receive 3 job offers during their studies. Do I need to specify how many offers I received? int offers = 0;

Now for some positivity. As I mentioned earlier, you can make very useful connections—primarily for your personal development. The campus itself is a great place to work, have fun, and socialize. The program, in terms of real-world skills, is more or less useless, but it will help you feel like a real worker, as you’ll often open a subject and have no idea what exactly needs to be done, finding solutions together with your peers. There are many events for different tastes and interests (big thanks to Drucilla).

In general, it’s up to you whether to spend your time here or not. If you’re a German speaker, it’s probably worth it. You’ll always have an advantage when it comes to getting a student job or internship compared to others. And once again, if you’re planning to move to Vienna with your last money and no serious savings—THINK TWICE. All the phrases on the website that stuck in your head are nothing more than an illusion.

I attended the 2024 February Piscine and my honest review would be that it was quite a rollercoaster of experience, emotions and struggles. One thing that was quite remarkable was the event organization and the coalition games which were quite nice and entertaining. They helped students relax, get to know one another, provide a team work environment met with challenges and motivation to push forward. However, the learning environment seemed very blank since even though they were implying that they would teach beginners how to code from scratch, none of that actually happened. They just provided some YT tutorial private playlist made by 42 for some exercises to get you started on, where the tutorials were basically made by 42 students giving you the most basic concepts possible while leaving some info out for you to find on your own on Google. The Peer Learning was helpful at times, however on a realistic perspective each person focuses more on their own issues and while asking for help it felt like you were begging your peers to help you out. In the Piscine you will use Shell/Bash , Git and C language using Ubuntu/Linux OS. People who had experience with C++/C# or Python/Java were able to have a head start with projects and exams, which the structure was basically creation with limited rules. It was like coding on Codewars. The Peer Evaluation was the main idea behind peer learning where students would evaluate projects on a random selection and while discussing with others, they would hypothetically share ideas and learn from each-other. When asking "tutors" (more like the student council) for help, they would just be limited to what they can answer and tell you to keep questions at a minimum or better yet not bother them at all. Some rules and guidelines made no sense, such as the double evaluation one, where the system would let you book 2 people at the same time to evaluate your project and you would get penalized for that with a community service. In conclusion, if you're a beginner that wants to learn coding it's best to learn and practice on your own first since during the entrance exam/piscine bootcamp you will have to mostly learn stuff by yourself either way. Some good resources would be reddit, git, and codespaces.

I've been a student at 42Vienna for a year now, and it's been an incredible journey. The peer-to-peer learning method is not only unique but incredibly effective. I've learned so much and have had the chance to collaborate with some amazing fellow students. I am really happy with my decision to be part of this coding school.
